Area and Volume

Under 4% correct on real student attempts. The formulas are given to you on the test — almost every miss is a wrong formula, a wrong scale, or a wrong target.

The rule

Use the formula sheet. Volume fills a shape; area covers it. For similar figures, scale factor for length is k. Area scales by k². Volume scales by k³. Perimeter scales by k.

Worked example

A rectangle has an area of 66 square meters and a length of 11 meters. What is the width, in meters, of the rectangle?

A — Area == length ×\times width; substituting the values, the answer is 6.

The traps

Wrong formula.

Choices use a related but wrong formula — circumference instead of area, sphere instead of hemisphere, forgetting the ⅓ in pyramid or cone volume.

Wrong scale.

For similar shapes, trap answers apply the length factor directly to area or volume instead of squaring/cubing it.

Wrong target.

The question asks for perimeter but choices give side length. Asks for height but choices give slant height. Stop only when you match exactly what the question requests.

The procedure

  1. Name the shape and the one missing value you need.
  2. Write the exact formula from the reference sheet.
  3. Plug in known numbers and solve in steps.
  4. For similar figures, find the length scale factor. Square it for area ratios, cube it for volume. Apply it.
  5. Reread the final question to confirm your answer matches the requested quantity.
