Equivalent Expressions
The single weakest skill in this system right now — 2% correct across real student attempts. Same value, different disguise: every trap comes from a rewrite step done half-right.
The rule
Equivalent expressions have the same value for all inputs. The SAT asks you to rewrite expressions by distributing, factoring, combining fractions, or using exponent rules. You're matching forms — not solving. After simplifying, the structure must match exactly.

The traps
When distributing a minus or subtracting a fraction, wrong answers flip only some signs, or drop the subtraction entirely.
For difference of squares or trinomials, wrong answers use incorrect square roots, swap sum/difference, or factor only part of the expression.
When finding one term's coefficient, wrong answers add only some contributing products, or add exponents instead of multiplying coefficients.
The procedure
- Identify the action: expand, factor, combine, or apply exponent properties.
- Distribute every term. Write all products before combining.
- Factor: pull the GCF first, then check difference of squares or use the product-sum method with grouping.
- Test by plugging a simple number (like 2) into both the original and your rewritten form — they must match.
