Equivalent Expressions

The single weakest skill in this system right now — 2% correct across real student attempts. Same value, different disguise: every trap comes from a rewrite step done half-right.

The rule

Equivalent expressions have the same value for all inputs. The SAT asks you to rewrite expressions by distributing, factoring, combining fractions, or using exponent rules. You're matching forms — not solving. After simplifying, the structure must match exactly.

Worked example

Which expression is equivalent to (9c+8)(4c36)(9c + 8) - (4c^3 - 6)?

  • A.

    4c3+9c+24c^3 + 9c + 2

  • B.

    4c3+9c+144c^3 + 9c + 14

  • C.

    4c3+9c+2-4c^3 + 9c + 2

  • D.

    4c3+9c+14-4c^3 + 9c + 14

Walk through it

Distribute the negative sign across the second parentheses: (9c+8)(4c36)=9c+84c3+6=4c3+9c+14(9c+8)-(4c^3-6) = 9c+8-4c^3+6 = -4c^3+9c+14, choice D. Choice B fails to distribute the negative sign to the 6-6, and choices A and C keep 4c34c^3 positive instead of 4c3-4c^3.

The traps

Sign errors with subtraction.

When distributing a minus or subtracting a fraction, wrong answers flip only some signs, or drop the subtraction entirely.

Half-factored or wrong-factor forms.

For difference of squares or trinomials, wrong answers use incorrect square roots, swap sum/difference, or factor only part of the expression.

Polynomial multiplication miscounts.

When finding one term's coefficient, wrong answers add only some contributing products, or add exponents instead of multiplying coefficients.

The procedure

  1. Identify the action: expand, factor, combine, or apply exponent properties.
  2. Distribute every term. Write all products before combining.
  3. Factor: pull the GCF first, then check difference of squares or use the product-sum method with grouping.
  4. Test by plugging a simple number (like 2) into both the original and your rewritten form — they must match.
